Top tips to ensure a successful insurance claim
Contact your insurance broker as soon as possible
Speak with your insurance broker, provide them with the necessary details and they will take care of the rest. This should be done as soon as possible, as it will speed up the claim process and allow you to return to regular business operations faster.
Take clear photos and videos of any damage to send to your insurance broker
Before commencing any clean-up work, always make sure to take photos and/or video footage of any property damage. Whether it’s flood damage, broken windows from a break-in or damage from a fire, photo and video evidence will allow your insurer to better assess any damage.
Speak to your insurance broker before authorising any building work
Always consult with your insurance broker before you authorise any repairs after you’ve made an insurance claim. Your insurer may wish to physically inspect the site first, or there may be a certain set of criteria that needs to be met by tradesmen performing repair work. Many insurers also work with their own tradesmen, so you may not be able to choose who completes repair work.
Keep receipts and proof of purchase records for your big ticket items
When purchasing goods, keep your financial records in order and keep your proof of purchase to prove that you owned a particular item – this could be a bank statement or a receipt.
If you don’t have purchase receipts, it can be handy to take and keep photos of your goods in them. This could be a photo taken purposely when the item was first purchased, or it could be images showing the goods in the background.
Don’t be afraid to dispute claim outcomes
In instances where an insurance provider rules against your claim, your insurance broker will be able to argue your case and will be familiar with any loopholes. This knowledge allows them to achieve a more possible outcome. In the event a complaint does need to be made to the ombudsman, your insurance broker will be able to work as your go-between, making the situation a lot less stressful for you.
